2006 Aerobatic Challenge

An Event Overview
By: Tony Fandino, Contest Director
2005 IMAC Sportsman National Champion

Well guys this one is now in the books. All I have energy to say is wow ….. what a great time. Thursday morning pilots started to show up to get some practice flights in.

Tom Reifsnyder and Jeff Shaw were getting ready for the weekend. The weather was just perfect but I was concerned about the forecast for the weekend that had a cold front moving down the state bringing cold, wind, and rain. Friday I got to the field and who do I see but Jim Neal from Ohio. This is Jim’s second year coming down to our contest and he was all smiles and why not, the weather on Friday was just perfect a light breeze from the south west and about 80 degrees by the end of the day there must have been almost 25 pilots there. Saturday starts out a lot cooler and breezier but quickly warms to about 70 degrees. We get registration knocked out quick and go through our pilots meeting where we discussed our plans for the day. The goal was to try to get 3 rounds in for the day.          ...Story continued below the slide show...

Fourty pilots ended up here despite the bad weather forecast. We had a lot on our plate to get the three rounds in with only 9 hrs of day light at this time of year. I have to give all the pilots a big pat on the back for doing such a good job. We almost got it all in but fell just short, that is Basic and Sportsman got the three rounds in but Intermediate, Advanced and Unlimited did not get a chance to fly their third round. We were strictly enforcing the two minute rule and making sure pilots had their planes running before the previous pilot exited the box. In Basic it looks like a rivalry is forming between Jordan Hamilton and Chris Kersey not far back was Oscar Cespedes keeping the pressure on the two leaders.

Sportsman saw Mike Elder come in with a purpose to win by taking all the sequences, trying to keep up with the pace where Gary Willis and Ben Sealock hanging right in there. Intermediate saw Pedro Jordan on fire still from his last win at the Redtail IMAC.

Not far behind where Alan Cook and Don Hamilton and they weren’t about to let up. Advanced was really the battle of the day with Kenny Willis and Steven Hamilton fighting it out, at the end of the day only four points separated the two. Trying to keep up with these two young guns was James Woodward who not only had to contend with these two but had motor problems all weekend. The unlimited class was no surprise with David Moser dominating and flying strong with Jeff Shaw, Papa Bear John Schroder, and Perry Genovisi bringing up the rear.

Sunday dawns and can you say COLD…. I think that was an understatement 51 degrees and 20 mph winds. What a combination, I think the wind chill was in the low 40’s but sure felt even colder. We started our day off by getting right in to the unknowns, after the unknowns concluded we started to finish the third round of known’s for Intermediate, Advanced and Unlimited. We concluded competitive flying at about 1:30 after which we opened the pit area for spectators to come out to the flight line and check out the planes and talk to the pilots. 2:00 and we start our flight demo’s Free style and narrative known.

Inside RC was there all weekend conducting interviews with the pilots and doing insider tips segments. The crew told me they had about 11 hours of tape to work with and they very pleased. Pilot raffles went on continuously for the two days of competition and I’m happy to report everyone went home with some goodies. We never forgot about our spectators having many raffles for them also. An event such as this one would not have been possible if it weren’t for our sponsors and volunteers who really stepped up to the plate.
