What a great time we all had! Our fields 8th birthday celebration was a
big hit with members and their families. Attendance was great. We bought food for 100 people
and the caterer always allows a 10% overage, just in case. At the end of the day there was
very little food left, so we must have had at least hundred or more in attendance. I know
there was free food, but we should have attendance like this every weekend... just for normal
flying.
Vicar Hernandez, our celebration coordinator, planned a fun fly event for
the morning, but the rain had other ideas. It was a one minute take off and land contest where
each contestant had to estimate when their one minute was up. We got about half way through
when the rain started. By the time it was over everyone was so mellow we just didn’t start
again.
We had a swap meet, however not many people brought things to sell. What
was there was good stuff though. I heard several people talking about the great deals they had
gotten.
Throughout the day raffle numbers were drawn and gifts given away.
Vicar had been careful to get modeling prizes for the members, but for family members he had
selected things like restaurant gift certificates, Block Buster movie rentals, and
certificates from local merchants. Nothing was very expensive, just fun things to get. Clark
Hopkins, the owner of Hobby Nut, also ran a raffle. He sold tickets for $5 each and when 20
were sold, a drawing was held. The winner had his choice of any $100 item from his truck.
These items were top quality and well worth the $5.
Clark also entertained us by flying a very small electric park flyer
around the pits all afternoon. This little plane had two engines and, surprisingly, was not
steered using the rudder. Instead, individual throttle controls allowed the plane to be turned
by throttling back on the appropriate engine. It flew extremely slow and usually 15 to 20
minutes at a time. It seemed like every time I looked up the plane was poking along, about 15
feet high.
At noon the caterer arrived with the food and had it set up and ready to
serve in no time. When the lunch bell rang, nobody was bashful. As you can see in the pictures
below, we all piled our plates high and pigged out! Loretta Westphal brought a carrot cake for
desert that was very unique. It was decorated like a Microhenrys’ cartoon, except instead of
a lady watching a man fly his plane it was the other way around. If you would like to see a
picture of it, check out below.
I can’t wait for next year! From the planning I’ve been hearing, it’s
going to be the best yet... don’t miss it.
